Engineers Week - Feb 20 - 26, 2011

 

The RJEC Awards Banquet      

 

The traditional Engineers Week Banquet is currently scheduled for Wed

Feb 23rd at the Jefferson Hotel.  The speaker will be Mr Jim Adams.

Mr. Adams is the Deputy Director of Planetary Science at NASA.

In 30 years he has worked on projects ranging from weather satellites to deep space probes to lunar landers and rovers.  He is passionate about encouraging people to fulfill their potential and working together to make the world we live in awesome.  Jim holds degrees from Westminster College and Villanova University and is the recipient of three NASA medals for exceptional service including outstanding leadership.  He, his wife and son live in Maryland The title of is talk is “New Worlds, New Discoveries in Planetary Science”

Is open to all member societies and their guests. The cost is $60 for individuals, $40 for students, and tables seating 8 are available for $425. Registration closes 2/18/2011

Engineer of the Year and Community Service Awards

 

As in past years awards for Engineer of the Year and Community Service will be presented at the banquet and all paid societies are asked to nominate deserving candidates by submitting the attached forms to RJEC by 1/7/2011.

Student Video and Written Essay Contests

 

RJEC will award cash prizes for the best student visual/video and written essays addressing their interpretation or best representation of an engineer or an

engineering career.  This year contest rules have been modified and the contests have been expanded to include all area middle and high school students. Students are encouraged to participate by submitting entries through participating math or science  teachers who will select the top 3 in each category and email them to RJEC board which will judge them based upon originality, creativity, accuracy and relevance. Prizes in each competition are: 1st - $200, 2nd - $125, 3rd - $75. All winners and a parent will be invited as RJEC guests to the banquet.  Entries are due to RJEC from teachers by 1/21/2011. Career Day - Feb 20th, 2011

 

2011 Career Day is scheduled at the Science Museum of Virginia on Sunday Feb. 20  in conjunction with Engineers Week. Once again, contests for Middle and High School Students will include an egg drop contest sponsored by ASME and a bridge building contest sponsored by ASCE. Complete contest rules and additional information on Career Day can be accessed by clicking the links below.  Career Day begins at 1:00pm but contest applicants are advised to be at the museum by 12:30 for registration. Career Day is a great opportunity to acquaint the youth of our community with the benefits of a career in science and engineering. RJEC member societies wishing to participate in Career Day should notify Mark Oakes (MOakes@genedge.org or 804-323-2226 ext 223) no later than 2/4/2011.
